Martín López-Zubero consigue la primera medalla de oro para la natación española al ganar los 200 metros espalda en los mundiales de Perth. También fue el primer español en ganar una medalla de oro olímpica al ganar la final de 200 espalda en los Juegos de Barcelona de 1992.

Martín López-Zubero gets the first gold medal for the Spanish swimming team by winning the 200-meter backstroke at the Perth World Championships. He was also the first Spaniard to win an Olympic gold medal by winning the 200 backstroke final at the 1992 Barcelona Games.

Sobre el cielo de la localidad de Palomares (Almería), se produce la colisión entre un avión cisterna KC-135 y un bombardero nuclear B-52, el choque hace que se precipiten a tierra 3 bombas de Hidrógeno de 70 kilotones, y que una cuarta caiga al mar. Este ha sido el mayor “broken arrow” (perdida de un arma nuclear) de la historia.

Over the sky of the town of Palomares (Almería), there is a collision between a KC-135 tanker plane and a B-52 nuclear bomber. The crash causes three 70-kiloton hydrogen bombs to fall to the ground, and a fourth falls into the sea. It has been the largest “broken arrow” (loss of a nuclear weapon) in history.

Es detenido Manuel Delgado Villegas, conocido como el Arropiero, el mayor asesino en serie de la historia de España. Aunque la policia sólo pudo probar siete asesinatos, él se declaró culpable de cuarenta y ocho.

Manuel Delgado Villegas, known as El Arropiero, the greatest serial killer in the history of Spain, is arrested. Although the police could only prove seven murders, he pleaded guilty to forty-eight.

En su taller de alta costura se formaron muchos de los grandes diseñadores actuales como Paco Rabanne, André Courrèges, Emanuel Ungaro, Hubert de Givenchy u Óscar de la Renta.

Fashion designer Cristóbal Balenciaga is born, considered one of the greatest haute couture couturiers in history. Many of today’s great designers, such as Paco Rabanne, André Courrèges, Emanuel Ungaro, Hubert de Givenchy and Óscar de la Renta were trained in his haute couture workshop.

El hidroavión “Plus Ultra” realiza por primera vez un vuelo entre España y Argentina. Tras el viaje el rey Alfonso XIII de España donó el Plus Ultra a la Armada argentina. Actualmente se exhibe en el Complejo Museográfico Provincial «Enrique Udaondo» de la ciudad de Luján, Argentina.

The “Plus Ultra” seaplane makes a flight between Spain and Argentina for the first time. After the trip, King Alfonso XIII of Spain donated the Plus Ultra to the Argentine Navy. It is currently exhibited at the “Enrique Udaondo” Provincial Museum Complex in the city of Luján, Argentina.

El puerto de Callao (Perú) se rinde tras 25 meses de asedio. España perdía su ultima posesión en América continental y Perú se independiza completamente.

The port of Callao (Peru) surrenders after 25 months of siege. Spain lost its last possession in continental America, and Peru became completely independent.

Nace en Zamora el piloto de motociclismo Ángel Nieto. Con 13 campeonatos del mundo es el segundo piloto con más victorias de la historia (Giacomo Agostini tuvo 15). Su superstición le hace decir que él, en realidad, ha ganado 12+1 campeonatos.

The motorcycle pilot Ángel Nieto was born in Zamora. With 13 world championships, he is the driver with the second most victories in history (Giacomo Agostini had 15). His superstition makes him say that he has actually won 12 + 1 championships.

Fallece Juan de Orduña uno de lo más grandes directores de la historia de España. Como director llegó a dirigir 48 películas y varias producciones televisivas. Tambien fue actor (21 películas) y fue el protagonista en la primera película sonora española: El misterio de la Puerta del Sol (1929).

Juan de Orduña, one of the greatest directors in the history of Spain, dies. As a director, he came to direct 48 films and several television productions. He was also an actor (21 films) and was the protagonist in the first Spanish sound film: The Mystery of Puerta del Sol (1929).

Arantxa Sanchez Vicario becomes the first Spanish tennis player to reach number one in the WTA. During her career, she won 4 singles Grand Slams (3 Roland Garros, 1 US Open) and 6 doubles (3 Australian Open, 2 US Open, 1 Wimbledon).

España, Gran Bretaña, Francia, Alemania, la República de Irlanda, Portugal, Italia, Grecia, Dinamarca, Luxemburgo, Bélgica y los Países Bajos firman el tratado de Maastricht que dará lugar a la llamada “Europa de los 12” y posteriormente a la Unión Europea.

El acorazado USS Maine se hunde en el puerto de la Habana tras una gran explosión. Este hecho, calificado por Estados Unidos como un atentado de España, hizo que que los americanos entraran en la guerra de independencia cubana. Cuba consiguió la independencia de España el 12 de agosto de ese año.

The USS Maine battleship sinks in Havana Harbor after a huge explosion. This fact, described by the United States as an attack by Spain, led the Americans to enter the Cuban war of independence. Cuba achieved independence from Spain on August 12 of that year.

Fallece en Francia el poeta Antonio Machado, uno de los más conocidos en el siglo XX. Machado era el más jóven de los escritores de la llamada “generación del 98”, una de las mejores de la literatura española.

The poet Antonio Machado, one of the best-known in the 20th century, dies in France. Machado was the youngest of the writers of the so-called “generation of 98”, one of the best in Spanish literature.

El teniente coronel Antonio Tejero irrumpe en el congreso de los diputados con un grupo de militatres e intenta dar un golpe de estado. El fracaso de este golpe se produjo, en parte, gracias a un mensaje televisivo del Rey de España pidiendo a los golpistas que obedecieran la Constitución española.

Lieutenant Colonel Antonio Tejero breaks into the Congress of Deputies with a group of militants and tries to carry out a coup. The failure of this coup occurred, partly, thanks to a television message from the King of Spain asking the coup plotters to obey the Spanish Constitution.

Fallece el guitarrista y compositor Paco de Lucía. Él fue uno de los renovadores del flamenco tradicional fusionándolo con el jazz o el rock, colaborando con grandes músicos como Santana o Al Di Meola. Entre todos sus premios destacan dos Grammy latinos (2004, 2010).

The guitarist and composer Paco de Lucía dies. He was one of the innovators of traditional flamenco, fusing it with jazz or rock, and collaborating with great musicians like Santana or Al Di Meola. Among all his awards, two Latin Grammys (2004, 2010) stand out.

Francisco de Miranda enarbola, por primera vez, la bandera tricolour de Venezuela tras conseguir la independencia de España. Este militar participó en las guerras de independencia de Estados Unidos, en la de Venezuela y en la revolución francesa. Su nombre está grabado en el Arco del Triunfo de París.

Francisco de Miranda flies, for the first time, the tricolor flag of Venezuela after achieving independence from Spain. This soldier participated in the independence wars of the United States, in Venezuela and in the French revolution. His name is engraved on the Arc de Triomphe in Paris.

El barco de pasajeros “Príncipe de Asturias” se hunde frente a las costas de Brasil tras chocar con un arrecife. Este es el mayor accidente de la marina española: murieron 451 personas y se salvaron 143.

The passenger ship “Príncipe de Asturias” sinks off the coast of Brazil after colliding with a reef. This is the largest accident in the Spanish navy: 451 people died and 143 were saved.

Una célula terrorista yihadista comete un atentado simultáneo a varios trenes de cercanias en la ciudad de Madrid. En el atentado fallecieron 192 personas y resultaron heridas 1858.

Nace Francisco Pizarro, explorador y militar español que conquistó el Imperio Inca (actual Perú). Pizarro se convirtió en gobernador de los terrenos que había conquistado. Su tumba se encuentra en la catedral de Lima.

Los Reyes Católicos ordenan la expulsión de todos los judíos que no querían convertirse al catolicismo, en total fueron unos 100000. Estos judíos, conocidos como sefardíes, cuentan actualmente con una comunidad de unos 2 millones y la mayoría aun habla el idioma que se usaba en España en el Siglo XV.

The Catholic Monarchs ordered the expulsion of all Jews who did not want to convert to Catholicism, a total of about 100,000. These Jews, known as Sephardim, currently have a community of about 2 million, and most still speak the language used in Spain in the fifteenth century.

Muere en Francia el pintor y escultor Pablo Picasso a los 91 años. Durante su carrera creó más de 16000 obras de arte. Fue uno de los exponentes del cubismo. Una de sus obras más importantes es el Guernica en el que describe los horrores de la guerra civil española.

The painter and sculptor Pablo Picasso dies in France at the age of 91. During his career he created more than 16,000 works of art. He was one of the exponents of cubism. One of his most important works is Guernica in which he describes the horrors of the Spanish Civil War.

El Partido Comunista está legalizado en España. El Partido Comunista de España (P.C.E.) se fundó en 1921 para acudir a la “Internacional Comunista” convocada por Lenin.

Se firma el tratado de Utrecht poniendo fin a la guerra de sucesión española. Tras la muerte sin descendencia de Carlos II de Habsburgo, comienza una guerra internacional entre los partidarios de un rey de los Habsburgo o uno de la casa de los Borbones (actuales reyes de España).

The Treaty of Utrecht is signed, ending the War of the Spanish Succession. After the death of childless Carlos II of Habsburg, an international war begins between the supporters of a Habsburg and those of a Bourbon king (the current monarchs of Spain are from the house of Bourbon).

España y Francia firman el Tratado de Aranjuez por el cual España intervino en la guerra de independencia americana. Este tratado incluía también la invasión de Inglaterra pero finalmente no se llevó a cabo.

Spain and France sign the Treaty of Aranjuez by which Spain intervened in the American War of Independence. This treaty also included the invasion of England but in the end it was not carried out.

Se inaugura la primera línea ferroviaria de alta velocidad en España (A.V.E.) entre Madrid y Sevilla. La línea se construyó para comunicar la capital de España con la Exposición Universal de Sevilla celebrada en 1992.

Spain’s first high-speed railway line (A.V.E.) between Madrid and Seville is inaugurated. The line was built to connect the capital of Spain with the Expo (Universal Exhibition) of Seville held in 1992.

El buque-escuela de la Armada Juan Sebastián Elcano emprende su primer viaje. Este velero es el segundo buque-escuela más grande del mundo (el primero es el ruso STS Sedov). En él se forman oficiales y suboficiales de la marina española.

The navy training ship Juan Sebastián Elcano undertakes its first voyage. This sailboat is the second largest training ship in the world (the first is the Russian STS Sedov). Officers and non-commissioned officers of the Spanish Navy are trained there.

Nace en Barcelona Joan Miró, pintor, escultor, grabador y ceramista español, considerado uno de los máximos representantes del surrealismo. En 2012 su óleo Peinture (Étoile Bleue), de 1927, fue vendido en la casa de subastas Sotheby’s por 29,2 millones de euros.

Joan Miró was born in Barcelona. The Spanish painter, sculptor, engraver and ceramic artist is considered one of the greatest representatives of surrealism. In 2012 his oil painting Peinture (Étoile Bleue), from 1927, was sold at Sotheby’s auction house for 29.2 million euros.

Fallece Juan Antonio Samaranch, expresidente del COI y gran reformador del olimpismo. Durante sus 21 años como presidente del COI se eliminó el carácter amateur de muchos deportes, inauguró el museo olímpico en Lausana y pudo ver unas olimpiadas en su ciudad, Barcelona, en 1992.

Juan Antonio Samaranch, former president of the IOC and great reformer of Olympism, died. During his 21 years as president of the IOC, he overcame the amateur character of many sports, inaugurated the Olympic museum in Lausanne and was able to see the Olympics in his city, Barcelona, in 1992.

Hoy celebramos el día del libro. En todas las ciudades encontrarás puestos en la calle vendiendo libros. Si vas a Cataluña o Baleares además del libro tendrás que comprar una rosa porque allí se celebra también el día de San Jorge.

Se emite el primer programa del concurso “Un, dos, tres … responda otra vez” que se emitió durante 10 temporadas. Este fue el primer formato televisivo español que se exportó al extranjero. Concretamente hicieron una versión del concurso Reino Unido, Portugal, Alemania, Países Bajos y Bélgica.

The first program of the TV show “One, two, three … answer again” is broadcast. The contest was broadcast for 10 seasons. This was the first Spanish television format that was exported abroad. A version of the contest was made in the United Kingdom, Portugal, Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium.

At the beginning of the Spanish-American War, the Battle of Cavite (Philippines) took place. In this battle the Americans defeat the Spanish Pacific fleet, this defeat causes the Philippines to join the Americans and fight against Spain to achieve their independence.

An expedition led by Alonso de Ojeda leaves from Cádiz to the “New World”. On one of the ships, the merchant Americo Vespucci was traveling. America was named after this merchant who on his return from his trip wrote several books on the discovery of the “New World”.

El explorador Hernando de Soto fallece en el río Mississippi tras unas fiebres. De Soto recorrió gran parte de los actuales estados del sur de Estados Unidos y fue el primer occidental en ver el río Mississippi. Entre 1928 y 1960 existió una marca de automóviles llamada DeSoto que vendió más de 2 millones de unidades.

The explorer Hernando de Soto died in the Mississippi River after a fever. De Soto toured much of the present southern states of the United States and was the first Westerner to see the Mississippi River. Between 1928 and 1960 there was a car brand called DeSoto that sold more than 2 million units.

The soldier and scientist Isaac Peral y Caballero dies. As a military man, he served his entire career in the navy, but his greatest scientific contribution was the creation of the first electric-powered torpedo submarine. His design was the model for most submarines until nuclear submarines went into operation.

Diego Velázquez was born in Seville, considered one of the greatest representatives of Spanish painting and a master of painting in general. Among his masterpieces are: The surrender of Breda, Las Meninas or Las Hilanderas. Most of his work is kept in the Prado Museum in Madrid.
