En nuestra vida cotidiana, existe un tema de conversación recurrente del que todos echamos mano cuando no sabemos de qué hablar: el tiempo. Las charlas banales con familiares, con vecinos pesados o con compañeros de trabajo tediosos, vienen inexorablemente acompañadas de menciones a la climatología local. No existe informativo en prensa, radio, televisión o internet que no incluya el pronóstico del tiempo, lo que nos sirve para documentar nuestra conversación: “Vaya día de perros. Y en la radio han dicho que mañana va a empeorar”.

In our daily lives, there is a recurrent theme of conversation that we all get hold of when we do not know what to talk about: the weather. Small talk with family members, annoying neighbours, or with boring work colleagues, relentlessly come accompanied by mentions about the local climate. There is no press, radio, television or internet news that doesn’t include the weather forecast, which helps us substantiate our conversation: “Oh what a terrible day. And on the radio they said it’s going to be even worse tomorrow”.

Si pensamos en el clima a largo plazo, más allá del tiempo que hará esta semana, este viene marcado por un concepto que está en boca de todos: el cambio climático. Muchos hablan de ello, pero pocos saben qué está realmente ocurriendo. La comunidad científica apoya mayoritariamente la tesis de su existencia y la responsabilidad humana en él. Sin embargo, existen quienes niegan tanto su magnitud como la intervención del hombre en sus efectos, dando lugar a agrios y encendidos debates televisivos.

If we think about the climate in long term, beyond the weather of this week, this comes with a concept that is on everyone’s mind: climate change. Many people talk about it, but few know what is really happening. The scientific community largely supports the thesis of its existense and the human responsibility for it. However, there are people who deny both its magnitude and the intervention of man in its effects giving rise to bitter and heated televised debates.

Dejando a un lado la controversia de nuestra más que probable implicación, la realidad nos muestra un panorama desolador. Durante los últimos años, hemos sido testigos de catástrofes atmosféricas que han azotado nuestro planeta con olas de frío y calor, sequías y lluvias torrenciales. Sus efectos se han sufrido en regiones que han sido prácticamente borradas de la faz de la Tierra, mientras que extensas zonas de cultivo han perdido sus cosechas. El balance de pérdidas económicas y humanas ha hecho reflexionar a la comunidad internacional, que ha buscado un consenso en forma de protocolos para luchar contra este fenómeno.

Leaving aside the controversy of our more than likely implication, reality shows us a bleak picture. During the last few years, we have witnessed atmospheric catastrophes that have hit our planet with cold fronts and heat waves, droughts and torrential rains. Its effects have been suffered in regions that have been practically erased from the face of the Earth, while extensive cultivation areas have lost their crops. The balance of economic and human losses has led the international community to reflect and seek consensus in the form of protocols to combat this phenomenon.

Entre otros muchos factores, la actividad industrial nos ha pasado factura, dejando su huella perniciosa en el clima actual. Pero no debemos dejarnos llevar por juicios sobre lo que se hizo y lo que podríamos haber cambiado de haber actuado de modo diferente. Ahora es el momento de buscar soluciones y aportar nuestro grano de arena en nuestro día a día: apoyando el uso de energías renovables, reduciendo los residuos que generamos en nuestro hogar, reciclando… Todos nosotros tenemos un papel que jugar en la conservación del medio ambiente.

Among many other factors, industrial activity has taken a toll, leaving its pernicious footprint on the current climate. But we should not be led by judgements about what was done and what we could have changed if we had acted differently. Now is the time to look for solutions and make our tiny contribution in our day to day: supporting the use of renewable energy, reducing the waste we generate in our homes, recylcing… We all have a role to play in the conservation of the environment.
